About Split
Split is the largest city on the Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea and the second largest city in Croatia. The population of the city is around 200.000, with about 20.000 students studying at the University of Split. “The most beautiful city in the world”, “The Mediterranean flower” and “The sportiest city in the world” are just some of the names its citizens like to call it thanks to its beautiful and historical monuments, ideal climate with 2.800 hours of sunlight per year and numerous renowned Croatian sportsmen and sportswomen born in Split. The heart and the foundation of the city is the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian where he retired after his abdication (a. d. 305). If you decide to explore its beauties on foot, you can do so in approximately fifteen minutes, although it would take a lifetime to explore every nook and cranny of this amazing place.
Some of the must-see sites on the walking tour are most certainly the palace substructure where the famous Game of Thrones was filmed, Peristil square, imperial mausoleum turned into a Saint Domnius cathedral in the 7th century, Temple of Jupiter, the palace gates, the promenade “Splitska Riva” and so on. Split is a place where the tradition meets modern life with the palace being a living structure even today after over 1.700 years. The palace and the surrounding city center are included into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Just a few minutes away from the old town there are nice city beaches with the most famous one, the sand beach Bačvice. There is also a wooded Marjan peninsula that offers beautiful views over the coast and islands. For sure, an abundance of restaurants and wine cellars will satisfy every gourmet lover.
